History is not fact alone. History is the interpretation of facts. It changes over time to reflect the needs, values, and desires of a given time and place; it is constantly revised and reinterpreted. History is, though you may not believe it, relative... Therefore, control of how history is written is a form of power. Perception, as some say, makes reality. Change people's perception and you can change the Truth, at least for a time; nothing is permanent. History is a construct. Everyone from popes, chieftains, presidents, philosophers to radicals and rebels have constructed history towards their own end. Historians do the same thing, but claim that they do it objectively, without bias, and simply for the sake of understanding the past. I am just a historian, but what I do different.

I don't have a tragic history or a fate to fulfill. I only want what is best for people; I want to live in a 'good' world. I don't pretend to aloof, or neutral like other historians because I know I can make a concrete difference. I can change history with just a thought, and I want to change it for the good of all of us. You might not agree with what I do. Maybe things happen for a reason, maybe there is a cosmic plan or maybe fate and chance should be allowed to run things. I don't know for sure, but I don't like the all the suffering and the evil I see every day. And of course, if I do manage to learn to change the Big Things, you know, really alter the Truth; you'll never know the difference....

Research

     Telepathy: Ultimate

To change history, you've got to understand it, and if history is just perception, then I need to understand what you know, that is, what you think you know. Did you hide a gun in your waistband? Are you planning on getting back at the hustler down the block? Once I know your personal history, I can alter it... I can't read everything, but I know how to work with what I can get.

I've studied you. I understand you. And I can change your personal history, at least temporarily. I can make you forget why you're here or who you are for a little bit. I know what motivates you, and I can change that: maybe your parents didn't hit you as hard as you remember or maybe it was harder. Our personal histories are a powerful force; they direct our actions in the future. Every individual I meet has a different personal history to change, but you can imagine what it is possible to make them do towards the greater good; changing what you remember, by invention or amnesia, will change the outcome of your decisions. What I've done will eventually wear off, and I can't change everything, but I will no doubt leave a mark. After all, the fact that I changed your perception of the past will become a part of that perception...

I can change not only perception, but also the facts themselves. To me, the past is mutable. It is just little things most of the time: a chance decision you made a few minutes ago could have gone the other way, I don't know if I can erase the big things: I can't make it so your species never evolved or stop the war that eradicated it from ever having happened. At least, I don't think I can... yet. That's really why I'm here, why I'm in Khazan. Like most of the 'people' I run into, I'm looking to help people. There are always little things that need to be fixed: someone who saw something they shouldn't have, a mispronounced word in a spell that backfired, or an arrow that was only a millimeter off target. The possibilities are limitless. Of course, I could make the opposite of all those things happen too. Still, history has a mind of its own; it has its own consistency and is adverse to change. I can still only change small things, or only temporarily change the big things, and not very often. But you know what? That is usually enough to help make the universe a better place.
