Persephone was an excellent, happy student, according to her teachers. They all loved her. Quiet and well-behaved, she was a star of the school algebra team as well as an accomplished member of the junior choir. Her actual life was not nearly so excellent, nor so happy. Her father had left her mother with only enough money to pay for the house and schooling and enough stress to cause a drinking problem. At school, Persephone persevered in her classes, taking no notice of the kids around her, of their parents who would come to pick them up, hug them and take them home while she waited for the bus. She was un-phased. That was just the way it was. Then at some point, her mother decided to get more involved with her life, and her schooling. And soon, some teachers began to love Persephone's mom more than Persephone. The rumors flew. Such scandalous behavior was unheard of at an institution such as this. Persephone didn't notice; she didn't care to pay attention to such things and rather focused on reading and doing her homework. She pretended not to hear things whispered as she would walk past in the hallways, stand nonplussed at the jokes bantered about during recess. Then one day, it happened. Some older boys decided to try to take advantage of the young Persephone. She didn't understand what was happening. She was just sitting in a corner of the courtyard during lunch, reading a book, while they slowly came up and surrounded her. She didn't know what was going on, but she was scared. They were gesturing. Then one of them grabbed her wrist. That's when she lost it, that's when little Persephone changed forever. To this day, she doesn't remember what happened after that moment.

Her next waking moment was in a facility, surrounded by rubber and totally insulated. Doctors and researchers always asking her questions, poking her, prodding her. Insulting her. Men, all of them, touching her, scaring her. This was the way it must be, she decided. They found her dangerous. She knew she was more powerful than them, could feel and see things that they couldn't. She knew this fascinated them, but she wasn't going to give into them. They were as threatened by her as she was by them, and she just wanted to be left alone. One day, her mother came to visit her with a friend, named Ms. Franklin. Ms. Franklin made her feel at ease. She didn't talk down to her like everyone else; Ms. Franklin treated her with respect and not like a child, not like a girl. Ms. Franklin was going to take her to something called the Oasis Academy, where she could study again and not feel worry about persecution for her unique abilities. She was finally going somewhere where she would be safe again.

Field Manipulation: Binding

     Magnetism: Superior

Her last few weeks in the facility, they had never allowed any metal to be around her, ever since she finally got fed up with that one doctor's stethascope. Ever since they realized she could manipulate metal to her will, they were very careful to insulate her room and everything (and everyone) in it. She had missed the feel of metal. Not the actual touch, but just sensing that it was there. Thinking about it, it always seemed somehow different, just looking at it fascinated her. She would later learn that this was a product of her ability to sense the flow of electricity and that she was attracted to metal's unique conducting properties. Her last day at the facility, comfortably ensconced in a metal car with Ms. Franklin, she decided to tie the gates of the facility shut. It took some effort but it was worth it, and she grinned in satisfaction as the frustrated guards shouted after her car as she left that terrible place forever.

She still doesn't remember what happened that day. Burn marks on the side of the building and a few old newspaper clippings attest to an estimated 10,000 watts being unleashed in the corner of the school courtyard. Nine autopsies of nine young teenage boys attest to third- and fourth-degree burns in streaks across and through their bodies. Whatever Persephone did that day, she doesn't know what it was, and all the other witnesses cannot be asked. She tries to recreate exactly what happened, but she loses focus and can't. She thinks she needs to feel threatened; that rarely happens at the Academy.

Persephone does not like men. Who could blame this little girl for that? She was abandoned by her father, isolated by her peers, and has always been a little uncomfortable around boys and men. A natural bookworm used to spending hours in her room by herself reading while other children played, she is in fact unused to sociable human contact. Of all the members of the Oasis Academy, the cold and standoffish Emma Franklin is the one she most closely relates to. Persephone prefers business, and when she has to spend her effort talking to people, she wants to know where it is going so she doesn't feel like she is wasting her time.

Getting a particularly interesting idea from a Junior Electronics book one day, Persephone decided to see if she could make her own personal monorail. First, she set up the flow in her head. She sees the ground right in front of her, she sees where she wants to go. She makes her flows bend towards it. Then she thinks about her own shoes, now covered in steel. She steps into the flow, and it whisks her to the other side. It took some practice, but she is now able to do it without whiplash. She hasn't taken the stairs sense.

"What is this doing other than destroying a bunch of perfectly good computers?" Persephone asked. "Focus on the task, then focus on the answer to the question," the instructor replied. Persephone looked down the field. They had been fascinated by her ability to fuse the circuits of computers together. They had already had her fry two more since she destroyed the first one accidentally while trying to 'feel' how it worked. Now she was to attempt to destroy one at a great distance. She looked at the computer. She felt inside it, all the drives holding charges, all the wires offering pathways with which to move that charge. She looked sharply at the machine, running by virtue of a power cable running inside. She rearranged the chargers. "Good," the instructor said as black smoke began to pour out of one side of the machine "now let's think about this. As a human being, gifted as you are, what could be more dangerous to you but a human being also gifted but with artificial enhancements? If you can disrupt the complex circuitry of a simple personal computer, you can disrupt the circuitry of more complex machines that people may try to use to hurt you"

Her instructors are watching, but she is concentrating. Lined up down the field from her are a series of buckets, each containing oil. "Come on little one, you can do it" one of them says. She hates it when they say demeaning things like that, it only makes her concentrate fasters. She wills the electric fields into position, just a bit more . . . and then CRACK! it all falls into place, and a chain of lighting flows from the first bucket across all of them, exploding them and setting the oil on fire. This is the first time she has detonated fifteen in a row, and everyone is very impressed.
