Die Hard with a Vengeance (also known as Die Hard 3) is the third entry in the American action film series Die Hard. It was produced and directed by John McTiernan (who directed the first film), written by Jonathan Hensleigh, and stars Bruce Willis as NYPD detective John McClane, Samuel L. Jackson as McClane's reluctant partner Zeus Carver, and Jeremy Irons as the main villain Simon Peter Gruber. It was released on May 19, 1995 and followed by Live Free or Die Hard 12 years later.

The film is set 5 years after Die Hard 2. A bomb explodes on an early morning at the Bonwit Teller department store. At the police station a man calling himself "Simon" phones Major Case Unit Inspector Walter Cobb and claims responsibility for the bomb. He orders suspended police officer Lt. John McClane to walk through the middle of Harlem wearing a sandwich board with "I Hate Niggers" written on it. McClane is driven there by Cobb and three other officers. Harlem electrician Zeus Carver spots McClane and tries to get him off the street before he is killed, but a gang of black youths attacks McClane and Carver who barely escape.

Back at the police station Simon calls again and orders McClane and Carver to go to an Upper West Side subway station. Carver refuses, saying this is a white people's problem, not his. He claims that he only saved McClane because a cop being killed in Harlem would have resulted in trigger-happy white cops patrolling the neighborhood. McClane lies and tells him Simon's threat was a bomb planted near Harlem, which convinces Carver to help. While the police force tries to determine Simon's identity, McClane and Carver run a gauntlet of "games" designed by Simon involving bombs planted throughout the city.

During a respite, FBI agents inform McClane and Carver that Simon is really Simon "Peter" Gruber, the brother of Hans Gruber, who was killed by McClane in the first film. They suspect him to be in the employ of terrorist Mathias Targo. Simon calls and tells McClane and the police that he has planted 2400 pounds of liquid explosive in a school and any radio or CB Communication may set it off.
